Rugby MAD is trots en dankbaar dat we een aanbeveling hebben ontvangen van de voorzitter van World Rugby, Bill Beaumont, voor de historische Memorial Match.

As Chairman of World Rugby it is always interesting to hear about historic occasions involving our sport that are being commemorated around the globe and this extraordinary match that took place in 1916 is no exception.

As Chairman of World Rugby it is always interesting to hear about historic occasions involving our sport that are being commemorated around the globe and this extraordinary match that took place in 1916 is no exception.

World War I affected countless millions of people across Europe and further afield with vast numbers of people being killed on both sides in a conflict of almost unimaginable hideousness. The power of sport to give respite or refuge – no matter how brief – from the world’s troubles is part of its attraction and I’m sure that on that day 100 years ago this rugby match offered a wonderful distraction for a few thousand people who were otherwise living with the realities of war.

I wish the organisers of this anniversary match well and I hope it will be used as a way to bring people together in a spirit of friendly rivalry while remembering those who have gone before. With its character-building values, rugby has an ability to unite people across divides in an atmosphere of mutual respect, solidarity and enjoyment. I feel sure those qualities will be evident when these two teams face each other again in Leeuwarden, a century later.

Best wishes,

Bill Beaumont
